Falmouth Week, 2008

Falmouth Week, 2008

Falmouth Bay

Falmouth Henri-Lloyd Dinghy Week 2008

By Chris Brown

This famous annual West Country event is run by the renowned Restronguet Sailing Club, situated on the shores of Carrick Roads (pictured here) where a certain Mr. Ainslie learned his trade.

The event forms part of the larger “Falmouth Week” which offers racing for everything from 68m long Superyacht Classics, 25-50’ racing yachts, traditional working boats and many local One-Design keelboat classes.

The 6 day series offers 11 races of varied courses, a formidable round of complementary afternoon teas / jazz bands / parties hosted by each local sailing club as well as a major concert / party in the Falmouth Event Center each evening! It is a simply delightful package.

This year Burghfield SC were well represented by Amber & Jamie Brown in their Feva, Chris & Georgie Brown in a Laser 2000, Richard & Sophie Goss in their lovely white Enterprise and Sally Denchfield in an RS200.
Falmouth Door

Racing was varied with a very windy SW on the opening Sunday testing many competitors breast stroke on the busy laid mark courses (I can confirm the water was nice and warm!). Monday brought a lighter shifty S/SW day with rare summer sun and at the end of 2 days racing BSC had established a firm grip on 2 of the top 3 places in the Medium Handicap Division. A mighty Mylor SC après-sail buffet (truly endless pasties and cakes!) followed by a crazy evening of singing and dancing to the tribute band “Noasis” soon cleared the salt streaks away however!

Tuesday was another very windy day with 20kn wind and 30kn gusts. A guest appearance from Mr. Mark Wilkes from BSC was made on the Laser 2000, unfortunately resulting in him gaining bruised ribs due to over-exertions on the dagger board! (we are pleased to report the patient is now making good progress). All was still positive in Medium handicap though, with Amber & Jamie now leading the class and Richard/Sophie a close 3rd. In fast handicap Chris/Georgie and Sally were still persevering in mid fleet. RSC served up another huge post race buffet and yes.. we enjoyed another big evening in the Event center with “Shameless” playing the day to a late close..

Wednesday saw 40mph winds and all racing was cancelled, with some relief to the party goers.. some of whom enjoyed a superb party with the Led Zeppelin tribute band later that evening!
Falmouth Band

Champagne sailing finally arrived on Thursday and in sparkling but shifty conditions the BSC contingent held their Class positions with more good results from Richard & Amber. Tides were now beginning to build from Neaps towards Springs and combined with the westerly offshore breeze it was a tricky day to master.

St. Mawes SC played host to us that afternoon & evening and a memorable party developed on the picturesque St. Mawes harbour quayside. Finally it was (yes) back to the Event center for the gig of the week - the “Bohemians”, a truly awesome Queen tribute band who nailed it musically & visually and literally brought the house down!
Falmouth Prizes

Friday duly became the day for the famous “Harbour race” which completed the series as well as offering an excellent tour of the harbour area. Faced with many potential “pot-holes” the BSC boats sailed a solid race and after a few hours of racing the kids had nailed another 2nd place which gave them the Series from their (by now) arch rival in a SOLO (who rather impressively was on his 30th consecutive Falmouth Week!) with Richard & Sophie Goss taking 3rd place.

Mum & Dad in the Laser 2000 did not reach the winners enclosure in fast handicap (12/29) but with a top half result in Georgie’s first dinghy regatta we were happy with that and are looking forward to doing Torquay Regatta next weekend ! Sally managed 11/29 in the Class.

The Royal Cornwall SC staged the final prize giving on their waterside lawn that evening with… yet another large SC buffet / party! Amber & Jamie received 150.00 pounds in vouchers from Henri-Lloyd as well as the Class Trophy for the week and the rather striking “Henri Lloyd Under 16 Helm” trophy.

In summary, doing this event requires a bit of careful planning but if you are seeking a varied regatta with great evening music & parties then this is one for your diary! Please do not hesitate to ask us for guidance on local arrangements. (Latest news; - The Burghfield Blazes are looking into doing this event next year).
