Jan 2007

I believe that Chris Rowlands won the honour of being the first RS400 to capsize in 2007 - not because he did things wrong when other people didn't, but because he was in the lead and got to the gybing point / capsizing point before anyone else! Another 3 boats decided to join him in testing the water temperature (cold!) in the next minute or so.

To see some of the racing, here are some pictures that I took during the afternoon after I gave up - the start would have been great if the start-line could have been moved 2 yards to windward in the last 2 seconds before the start! i.e. to windward of the boats!
Pictures.
And a choice of videos.

RS400 Fleet at Burghfield Sailing Club

Burghfield sailing club hosts a large fleet of RS400’s and welcomes sailors of all abilities to sail and race at the club. The fleet is very friendly and helpful making the club ideal for any novice 400 sailors starting out. Members are always ready to offer advice regarding boat tuning and maintenance including the clubs chandler who is also an RS400 sailor. Newcomers to the fleet will soon find themselves enjoying the clubs facilities on the water and in the bar afterwards. The 400’s always seem to be the last to leave!

Racing the RS400 at Burghfield is both competitive and challenging. Ability within the fleet ranges from the nationally competitive to competent club racer. Over the past 18 months, we have also welcomed a number of new starters into the fleet, both people returning to sailing after a few years gap and those who haven't done much dinghy sailing in the past. This has given a new lease of life to the club fleets, while at the front the club has reinforced its position as one of the best 400 clubs in the country by winning the RS400 Top Club Championship for the first 2 years of the event. Additionally Burghfield hosts an RS400 open every year and runs a number of training days coached by some of the top sailors from the club or open circuit.

We have an active email group providing lots of up to date news and discussion for the RS 400 fleet at this website burghfield400s

For further information please ask for (RS400 1254 "iRiS") or approach any of the 400 sailors at the club or bar.

A few statistics from 2006 for the RS400 fleet:
- The fleet races during the Frostbites, Spring, Summer, Autumn series attracted 33 different boats, helmed by 38 different people.
- We had an average of 5 boats per race signed on (and more than that sailing!) and up to 12 at any one time.
- 14 different people won a race, with just 3 boats winning 10 or more races, and we had 6 different winners of the 8 series.
- 14 different boats completed 10 or more races. The prize for the most appearances was split between Malcolm MacVean/Brian Deacon and Chris/Gill Jordan with 44 races each; although Steve Middleton and Chris Rowlands completed 45 races by swapping helms.
- Chris Rowlands was possibly the most successful helm overall, winning 61% of his races; closely followed by Tom Jones (60%), Steve Middleton (52%) and Rob Martin (50%).
