4th May
Comet Open
Twelve visitors from all over the South of England sailed at Burghfield’s Comet Open on 28th April despite the cold and wet day. However, there was a good wind blowing down the lake allowing the first beat of the first race to be set the length of the water. There were numerous changes in position in the first race, with Michael Ettershank (Eyott SC) eventually taking line honours. In race two Bob Dodds (Crawley Mariners YC) led for most of the race, but was caught by Burghfield sailor Chris Robinson when he almost capsized, and then sailed to the wrong mark. The last race was initially led by Chris Robinson, but he was eventually caught by Ian Stone (Maidenhead SC) who went on to win. However, Chris held off Bob in a tacking duel on the last beat to the finish second in the race, which was sufficient to win the event.
2nd May
Please help us improve sailing provision at the club!
The sailing committee has, over recent meetings been considering what we might do to improve what the club offers for both racing and recreational sailors alike. To this end the committee has put together a survey that we would ask ALL MEMBERS to undertake so that we can, if requested, make changes to what the club offers.

The survey is aimed at all members, and, as a members club- YOUR VOICE COUNTS.

It should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete and would help the committee and the club immeasurably to ensure that it provides what you want out of being a club member. Please note: the most valuable information is made in the comments boxes so don't hold back your views!

Please complete the survey by Sunday 20th May 2012

Click below to take the survey.

Open Day

OPEN DAY 2012 Saturday 19th May 2012 from 11am until 4pm
On Saturday 19th of May the club opens its doors and welcomes anyone who would like to find out more about sailing and racing at Burghfield sailing centre. Weather permitting there will be the chance for all visitors to get out on the water with our crews to experience the fun of sailing. Last year we made over 200 runs with our visitors, many of whom decided to join us on the spot.

The club supports all types of sailing activities including: racing, recreational sailing, family social sailing, youth sailing and training. Berkshire Sail Training are also onsite and provide RYA approved courses for all ages in sailing, windsurfing, and powerboating. Plenty of members young and old will be on hand to help you get out on the water and answer any questions about BSC and sailing in general.

It’s a good idea to bring a spare set of clothes and shoes on the day, something to change into if you get wet. Hot food will be available all day in our Club House where you can relax and talk to other club members and get an insight into the activities of this flourishing sailing venue.

We’ll be offering a range of incentives on the day to make starting or improving your sailing as easy as possible. For complete beginners BST will offer a special introductory package on their 4 day RYA level 1 and 2 training course. Achieving RYA 2 allows club members to hire boats from the clubs fleet.

For more experienced sailors and racers wanting more time on the water, a special 2012 new joiner’s package offers a range of incentives to help you get the most out of club membership at BSC during 2012.

If you can’t make it on the day you are welcome at any time to come along and find out more by contacting Pat Forbes Manager at BSC on 01189 303614 or email manager@burghfieldsailing.org

AC: Go To Sea

Admirals at Sea Sat 14th & Sun 15th July 2012
The Admirals Saturday Sailors have organised an alternative venue to Weymouth this year and you are invited to take part. Places are strictly limited as the venue although a large club can only accommodate about 12 extra boats because of space restrictions so please if you'd like to come along be sure you're fully committed or you'll be preventing someone else from enjoying the sailing.

Venue: Itchenor Sailing Club (Chichester Harbour)
- The club is very well catered for with superb facilities (they have over 1600 members - half of which sail fixed keel boats). Although space is limited for storage and launching they will find us space to store our boats (up to 12) over the weekend on their storage deck and boats can be launched easily all day from their jetty. Boats need to be offloaded in the public car park and pushed on trolleys about 500m down a private lane.
- Sailing in the harbour is purported to be excellent, possibly even more amenable than Weymouth and is a great location.
Details:
- There would be no specific rescue cover but there is so much sailing going on and ribs around, that help would be on hand if anyone got into real difficulties. we do not recommend this trip for total beginners though or anyone nervous about going onto the sea for the first time although it is relatively sheltered.
- Trailers need to be left in the public car park so will need a lock and there is a weekend car park charge of £5.50 or £3.50 per day.
- Harbour dues are £5.20 for the weekend and the club can arrange passes for us on arrival.
- There is accommodation above the clubhouse comprising 8 rooms some of which are en-suite costing from £46 - £60 per room per night (Twins mainly). The clubhouse is open for breakfast from 8.30am. Alternatively there is a pub with rooms 2 minutes away in Itchenor or B&B's in the general vicinity and Chichester which is about a 10-15 minute drive.
- The local pub looks good for an evening meal and the clubhouse serves canteen style food all day until about 8pm
- The club would want a small fee for storing boats and using the facilities currently estimated at £20 per boat.

The outline plan is to start with a briefing at 10.30am on Saturday morning and be on the water by 11 am. Sailing will then continue in the afternoon and on Sunday until approx 16:00. The sailing activities will be weather dependent, but can be agreed depending on participants.

People can choose to travel down on Friday evening or Saturday morning as they wish, or indeed to join us later on Saturday.

We intend to book a table for a group meal in the local pub on the Saturday evening for any who would like to join us.

Whilst organised by Admiral's Saturday Sailors, we would like to encourage any member of BSC interested to join us.

If you'd like to come along please send an email to chris1.webb@btinternet.com confirming names of those participating and the type of boat you'll be bringing. I will then confirm that places are available and will provide details of where to send a cheque for £20 to cover the clubs fees and secure your booking. All other costs will be paid by you direct to the venue and final details of how to book these will be provided in our reply along with details regarding booking accommodation etc.

Don't forget places are limited so it's first come first served

Welcome
Welcome to Burghfield Sailing Club’s Optimist Fleet area.

BSC Oppie Club, (OC) is the section of the club dedicated to developing kids water confidence and sailing skills in a structured and safe environment. For those kids that wish to race, we’ll get them prepared for competing in the Nationals.

The Optimist Fleet falls naturally into two separate areas, Optimist racing and Oppie club:
Optimist Racing
Sailors that have developed their ability to a high standard (IOCA Grade 3 and above) will progress into our racing fleet (this includes Gold fleet, Silver fleet and Bronze fleet). During May to October, this runs alongside Oppie Club. During the colder months this runs standalone, sometimes there are dedicated training sessions, sometimes these are combined with other regional sailors, other times the kids compete in normal club Sunday racing. For further details on the racing side feel free to contact our Optimist Fleet Leed, Alex Pearce at oppiepearce@yahoo.com You may also find the information you need in our other sections of this site or at our Optimist Racing Page.
Wednesday Evening Pursuit

Wednesday evening racing
Read below if you are new to the series to find out how it works, and how to give yourself your initial personal handicap.

Click the image to the right for a sample video from last years racing!
Wednesday Evening Pursuit
The most popular Wednesday Evening series in the country will be re-starting on Wednesday 18th April 2012. From then it will run through to the last race on 17th August. The races will start at 18.50, with a scheduled finish time of 20:00. The races will be followed by the very popular "Sailors Suppers" in the club house.

As usual, the initial personal handicaps will be set to 50% of the values from the end of last year.

If you have not sailed in this series before please read the Explanatory notes so that you have an idea of the way it works, if you still have any questions please drop us a line.
Jeremy Carey, Principle Race Officer

For those who are new to the series, or those who have changed boats, we will need to assign you with an initial personal handicap. Initially, it can be anything from -2 to +2 depending on your level of experience. Just follow these guidelines:

If you are new to racing, use -2 minutes, this will give you a bit of a head start.

If you are a reasonably competent club racer, start from the scratch time for your boat.

If you are a competitive racer comfortable at open meetings, use +2 to give yourself a challenging race.

Of course, you can use -1 and +1 if you fit in the middle somewhere.

Note that most people in the fleet will already have personal handicaps from previous years so you are just trying to pick a number which will slot you in at the right place. If you are not sure just ask.

Also note that if we feel you have got it wildly wrong, your handicap may be manually adjusted for your second race but after that it will only be done automatically.

If you are fairly new to racing, then there are lot of pointers to further useful information on the Introduction to Racing pages.
N12 Open 2012- Report
The forecast was looking a little ominous before the event, with a high sitting across most of the country and so it was with a degree of trepidation that we set off for the club in the morning, arriving to beautifully sunny, though mirror like conditions. Visiting teams arrived, bringing the total to 13 teams, and started with a gentle approach to boat rigging. By 10.30 and the race briefing there were starting to be signs of wind rippling down the lake from the East. Was this just an increase in traffic on the M4 which borders the eastern end or were we in for a timely infusion of precious pressure from a sympathetic Thor?

By the scheduled start at 11am, thunder, there wasn't, but enough wind there was for the fleet comprising of a healthy mix of 6 foiling boats, five AC's (single bottomed) and a two Double bottomed non foilers. A line biased by the oscillating gentle breeze, meant being next to the committee boat was a popular place to be, and though this position was won by Jeremy and George in their borrowed Crusader, it was soon clear that Graham and Zoe had made a good move early on by going left and were in a strong position, being followed by Jon and Charlotte and Tom and Robert. These three were first to the windward mark, followed by Nigel and Chris in their Numinous. As the fleet headed around the 'P' course for the second time, Nigel and Chris caught up and passed both Tom and Jon to hold second place for a time, before Jon came back before the end. Further down the fleet the AC's were having a good battle of their own intermingled with the two foiling 'Foolishes' of Nick and John and Howard and Ella in their 'Annie Apple'. Ian and Jenny led the AC's from the start and were showing good pace throughout the race in the fickle wind conditions whilst Howard and Ella were going well in their 'Apple'. Tom White was also showing ominous pace off wind in his borrowed Warlock taking heads downwind, though struggled to get it pointing on the way back upwind. Places were changing regularly throughout the fleet as gains and losses were made in the varying wind conditions.

Graham and Zoe took a clear win in Race 1, with Jono and Charl having fought hard to regain second place as they crossed the line from Nigel and Chris.

During lunch there was a increase in wind combined with an increase in oscillations, but Race Officers Rob and Jan Martin did a superb job to account for this both before and during the afternoon races, moving marks accordingly. Race 2 got off cleanly, and after a close start the noses of Jon Ibbotson & Charlotte Stewart and Graham Camm & Zoe Ballantyne poked out of the pack. Graham Camm & Zoe Ballantyne rounded the windward mark first. On the second lap Tom & Robbie Stewart found rhythm on the approach to the windward mark to claim second which they defended to the finish. In the AC's the battling fleet of Crusaders were again led by Ian and Jenny, who maintained their dominance within the fleet recording a second 5th place overall. That is not to say that there was not plenty of changes of position ad the swinging breeze was allowing for some big losses and gains! A particular shift around Pancake Island, (named for its unleavened status not its relationship with Shrove Tuesday!) allowed Jeremy and George, who had forgettable start and weren't making great inroads into the pack ahead, to get back into contention and take a few heads before the final gun.

Race 3, and the wind had settled somewhat to its original easterly direction, though a big shift seconds before the start put those towards the pin end in fine position with Jon Ibbotson & Charlotte Stewart building a good lead. In the AC fleet, Tom and Helen were in a perfect position on the start and had a superb first beat, rounding the windward mark narrowly in fourth place and holding their own against the leading three doubled bottomed boats, with John Nixon and Ian Smith on their heels. As the fleet headed into lap two Jon and Charl held a clear lead but the chasing boats took the risk of going the other side of Pancake island where there was more breeze and despite sailing further Graham Camm & Zoe Ballantyne took the lead which they maintained to the finish. Further down the fleet a few Jeremy and George once again got a very healthy lift which gained them a good 100yds and put them back into the chasing pack taking two places up the final beat and right on the stern of Ian and Jenny. They maintained this position on the two reaching legs but as they came into the final run toward the finish line, they got alongside Ian and pipped them by ½ a boat length with Tom and Helen a boat length ahead of the pair to take 5th overall in the days final race.

After the pack down, the prize giving was held in the clubroom accompanied by tea and Cake, with Graham and Zoe taking the main prize of the day, Ian and Jenny the first AC boat and a special prize was awarded to John Nixon and Sue Howe who had traveled from Derby for the event, even with the light wind forecast... now that's commitment to your sailing! Thank you to Burghfield Sailing Club for organising and hosting the event and also a special thanks to local club members Alan and Syd Beeton who provided three of the boats on the entry, both to visitors and locals alike.

Jeremy Carey and Graham Camm.

Burghfield N12 Open 2011 24th March 2012
We look forward to welcoming you to the 2012 Burghfield open and hope to see you on the day.
There will be three races, with two to count, first race from 11am with two further races back to back after lunch. As has become the norm over recent years, we'll have some lovely cake and tea available after the event and our caterers will be around for breakfast and lunch menus.
If you have any queries about the event please feel free to contact me Jeremy Carey

To help the day run smoothly we are operating a pre-registration form below which allows you to add much of the required information prior to the event. This will reduce the time and hassle of registration on the Saturday morning and is also hugely beneficial to the club to help organise the event in advance and make it successful.

In addition to reducing paperwork it will also save you money! If you enter on the day the entry fee is £17 per boat, but pre-register now and the entry fee is only £15. Pre-entry does not require pre-payment so if for some unfortunate reason you cannot make the day after having registered, do not worry you will not have lost your entry fee.

Sport Relief at Burghfield Sailing Club
Sport Relief at Burghfield Sailing Club
Listeners to BBC Radio Berkshire will know that Tim Dellor, their Sports Correspondent, very gamely agreed to take on the challenge of 29 Olympic Sports in a week for Sports Relief. On Monday 12th March he arrived at BSC to take on his sailing challenge where three boats (Finn; Laser; and RS Vision) had been rigged for him to choose from.

On a typical day at BSC with beautiful sunshine and a steady light breeze, Tim started with an interview for radio with some friendly banter with Charles Gilchrist and Peter Colvin. When Tim asked Charles which boat he should try, he was advised to take the Laser - because it would be the easiest to right when he capsized! Common sense prevailed in the end and the Vision was launched with Tim at the helm and Charles crewing.
Tim made another recording for Radio by taking the listeners through the process of tacking. This was made all the more difficult because he was holding the radio mike all the way through the tack. Tim did well considering that the last time he had sailed was as an 11 year old at BSC on a summer course. All too soon they had to head back to the shore for a last radio interview with Charles before Tim left to go on his way with 24 challenges remaining.

Topper

Welcome Burghfield Topper Sailors
Whether just messing about in boats, having fun off the beach, learning to sail, flat out blasting or competitive racing, there are so many reasons for sailing the Topper. It requires little maintenance, is easily rigged in a matter of minutes, is rugged and safe for beginners and an exciting race boat too - and it is car-toppable.
Club Racing and Coaching
For Sunday racing at the club the Topper competes in the slow handicap fleet. You will often see them taking part, especially during the Spring, Summer and Autumn series - they are easily spotted by their multi-coloured sails.

If you are interested in racing at the club, then come along on a Sunday or during the summer on a Wednesday evening when pursuit racing also takes place, and have a chat to some of the other sailors who are always pleased to help you get started. We have both adults as well as junior and youth sailors who compete regularly.

An excellent guide to club racing can also be found here.

We also have regular Topper coaching on Sundays throughout the year for our Junior and Youth sailors. This training is free for any club member that has RYA 2 or equivalent - i.e. can sail a triangular course and capsize and recover. There are often a dozen or so sailors at the training spanning a broad range of abilities.

If you would like more information about Toppers at the club, then e-mail toppers@burghfieldsailing.org
Sailing Committee

Sailing Committee
The sailing committee is responsible for organizing all of the sailing events and activities at the club. It is chaired by the Rear Commodore Sailing and consists of representatives from all of the major classes and groups within the club.

If you have any questions of suggestions just have a chat at the club or drop the appropriate representative a mail. We are always looking for help so if you would like to be more involved, please let us know.
Rear Commodore Sailing: Charles Gilchrist
Charles comes from a sailing family and learnt to sail on the Isle of Wight when quite young in a proper clinker built Scow before progressing onto state of the art Mirrors. He had not sailed since growing too tall to see under the Mirror’s sail until about two years ago when he joined BSC.

On the two or three occasions a year when he gets a chance to sail, he takes part in the Admiral’s club activities in his Enterprise or Laser. He states 'my sailing skills are as rusty as my halyards but that does not stop me from helping children to succeed and learn from their mistakes' and gets as much pleasure from this as from making his own mistakes!

His aim is to continue developing Junior sailing activities but with particlular focus on helping the less competitive children into recreational sailing.
