Optimist Easter Course 2010

Optimist Easter Course 2010
The time of year has arrived when our thoughts turn towards the spring and the beginning of the new sailing season, and what better way to kick start the year than with the ever popular Burghfield Easter Course. It's a great way to brush up on the skills you learnt last year. This will be the fourth year that we have run this successful course using qualified RYA coaches and demand as ever will be high so don't delay register today!

There will be one course which will run for four days from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th April and the children will be split into separate groups depending on their ability. Groups will range from those who have just mastered the basics to those who are looking to hone their skills and/or have started racing. The Easter course is not for sailors who have no experience and are looking to step into a boat for the first time â€' those sailors will be very welcome in our Oppie Club Start Sailing group which starts in May.

The programme will consist of on/off the water training sessions interspersed with some great fun (warming) games. As in previous years we will be running a house parent rota (so long as we have enough willing parents) so that children over 8 years old can be left at the club. There will be a parents afternoon on the Friday when parents can come along and see how much their children have progressed.

Sailors must have reached a minimum level of Oppie Club G1 or equivalent â€' that is to sail confidently off the painter and do a basic figure of eight including a tack and a gybe. Given the potential for cold weather, we would strongly recommend a full length wetsuit (and preferably a drysuit) â€' wetsuits are now relatively inexpensive (or can often be bought second hand) and the sailor will get so much more enjoyment from the week if they are warm. Sailors must also have their own buoyancy aid suitable for their age/size. A full kit list will be sent to those registered nearer the time of the course.

Any sailors under 8 years of age will require a parent to be at the club at all times. When you pre-register for the course, please give due thought to your child’s ability â€' the coaches and organisers want all children to have a thoroughly enjoyable time, but do reserve the right to take a child off the course for reasons of behaviour or their continual refusal to participate in activities as this can affect safety and the ability of the coaches to work effectively with the other sailors.

The expected cost of the course will be £150 - £200. Final confirmation of price will be dependant on numbers and will be advised two weeks before the commencement of the course. In order to keep the costs to an absolute minimum we will also need volunteers to form a rota for a clearing up each day (therefore negating the need for cleaners).

If you are interested in your child attending the Easter course, please register now by completing the form available here. There is a .doc and a .pdf version available to download. A deposit of £50 is required along with the form to secure your place.

There are a limited number of polypropylene Oppies that we have available for hire, but these can only be used in the first group, all sailors in other groups are expected to have their own GRP or wooden Optimist that is in a seaworthy condition and suitable for sailing for the duration of the course. If you require the use of a club Oppie, please indicate this when you complete the form.

Confirmation of places is on a first registered basis but we will endeavour to schedule enough coaches to accommodate all those who register before the 19th March. After that time we will confirm if you have a place and ask you to pay the balance. Any bookings after the 19th March will be subject to space being available.

If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Look forward to seeing you all there.

Mike McNamara talk- A Review
A very warm thanks was given to Mike at the end of last nights superb talk by the fifty or so clubmembers and visitors alike who attended.

Mike provided an outstandingly enjoyable evening and gave us all a very detailed and sightful look at how our sails and rigs should be working. Both funny and intuitive, he entertained us throughout the evening and has left, judging by the responsess heard so far, everybody dwelling on the thoughts of how, not only set theirs sails and rigs better, but also to make more effective tactical judgements.

It should be very interesting to see how this affects (and hopefully improves) our sailing in the future.

After such a succesful evening we are now eagerly awaiting the next talk by Steve Cockerill on the 7th April. The booking form is now available and with the success of this talk I am sure that we will once again not be dissappionted by Steve's insights into sailing!
A talk by Steve Cockerill- 7pm, 7th April 2010
The second talk this year will be by Steve Cockerill on the 7th April 2010 at 7pm. Steve is a very well known Sailor, Chandler (Rooster Chandlery) and now boat developer and builder. He has previously come to the club to give a talk about his 'Boat Whisperer' methodology for sailing.

This year he will be giving a general talk about. Sailing, tactics, tuning, with the emphasis based upon, but not purely, singlehanded sailing.

Menu

Chile or vegetarian Chile with rice and nachos
please enter your choice on the booking form link below

Cost for the evening is £5.00 per head for adults payable on the night and children (U16) are Free. Meal is an additional £5.50

RS Vision

Welcome to the BSC RS Vision webpage
The RS Vision is showing expanding popularity at Burghfield and is a great introductory dingy suitable for the whole family to either race or just cruise around in. Though powerful it can be easily reefed to make it more comfortable to sail and with up to four on board there i room for all.

The Club owns its own RS Vision which is available to members for hire at a very comptetitive rate over Saturdays and Sundays and Wednesday evenings during the summer period and Sundays only over the winter.

With the expansion of the class at the club it was decided to host an RS Vision open for the first time in 2009 and after a successful event last year we are repeating it again this March.

We hope that members and visitors alike who own Visions will book the following date into their diaries as it should be a great event. The Lake is perfectly suited to the RS Vision, with large, flat water and the islands to add interest.

More details and the date for the open are listed below, but if you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact the RS vision association or, if you are club members, e-mail me using the link below and I will try to answer your questions.

Burghfield N12 Open 2010- Gill Series 1- 27th March 2010
We are very pleased to welcome the N12 Gill Series to the club for the second time this year and hope that it proves to be a great event.

To help the day run smoothly we are operating a pre-registration form below which allows you to add much of the required information for the Gill Series prior to the event. This will reduce the time and hassle of registration on the saturday morning and is also hugely beneficial to the club to help organsie the event in advance and make it successful.

In addition to reducing paperwork it will also save you money! If you enter on the day the entry fee is £18 per boat, but pre-register now and the entry fee is only £16. Pre-entry does not require pre-payment so if for some unfortunate reason you cannot make the day after having registered, do not worry you will not have lost your entry fee.

Olympics 2012
With Club Member Ally Martin looking exceedingly strong to make it to the Olympics in 2012 as part of the Women's Match Racing Team, to keep you in the loop about her progress we have deicated this page to updates about her progress.
GBR Match Race Girls are on top of the world
Ally Martin and team GBR
They’ve proven themselves as one of the teams to beat in the newest Olympic sailing class, and now Britain’s Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Ally Martin have had an added boost to their 2012 campaign.

The ‘GBR Match Race Girls’ have stormed into the world number one spot in the ISAF women’s matchracing world rankings, ovtertaking the long-standing leader Claire Leroy of France to claim the topposition for the first time.Leroy occupied the number one spot for four and a half years, but the Skandia Team GBR trio havedeposed the French skipper after proving a potent force on the women’s match racing circuit in itsinaugural year as an Olympic class event.

They won the ISAF Sailing World Cup series in 2009 and claimed silver at the first World Cup event of 2010 â€' the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta â€' where they went into the final unbeaten from 18 races in the Elliot 6m competition.

“Reaching the number one spot is a great feeling,” the 23-year-old Macgregor admitted. “It's good to know that our training programme is taking us in the right direction and that we're confident in the areas we need to improve on long term.”
She continued: “We were really pleased with our performance in Miami.
“I think the match racing event out there was a great success with some new teams, plus some old teams from the match racing circuit as well as former Yngling, 470 and Radial sailors coming through and racing in the new Elliot 6m boats.
“There were lots of people out watching, and a demanding schedule but it was great with everyone getting to race so much. It’s all looking quite promising for this year’s World Cup series.”
Credit: OnEdition Lush, 29, added “We’re really enjoying the Elliot 6’s â€' they’re really physical boats and are producing some close, exciting races.
“The teams who are sailing the boats well are rewarded, but all the gains you make are small and hard to achieve.”

We have arranged with Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, headquarters of the sailing for the 2012 Olympics, to take a group from Burghfield on the weekend of 10th and 11th July 2010 and sail at their facilities, either in members own boats or those chartered from Sail Laser.

This year, we plan to start with a briefing at 10am on Saturday morning and sailing by 10.30am. People can choose to travel down on Friday evening or Saturday morning as they wish, or indeed to join us later on Saturday. We will continue sailing on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Individuals looking to make a longer weekend will be able to carry on sailing throughout Sunday afternoon. Individuals looking to make a longer weekend will be able to carry on sailing throughout Sunday afternoon. Safety cover will be provided from the Burghfield Rib (Eric). Whilst weather dependent, we hope to offer some coaching and stuctured activities.

Club Boats
Don't have a boat of your own, but want to sail? Like to try out some different boats? BSC has club boats which can be used by club members, and we're getting more.
RS Vision
The Club now has a brand new RS Vision for use of members.

This is primarily used during Admiral's Club but may be taken out at other times when rescue cover is available and can be booked through the office â€' telephone 0118 9303604 or email info@burghfieldsailing.org.

A contribution of £15 towards costs is requested for each session. Damage caused by negligence may be charged.

In order to ensure that the boats remain in reasonable condition, the boats can be borrowed by members with RYA level 2 dinghy sailing or equivalent, but cannot be sailed single-handed.

Please report any faults or damage immediately after use to bosun@burghfieldsailing.org
Oppies
The club owns 10 Polypropylene training Oppies which are used during Oppie Club.

Use by members at other times may be possible with prior arrangement.

Please contact oppieclub@burghfieldsailing.org

Sailing Committee
The sailing committee is responsible for organizing all of the sailing events and activities at the club. It is chaired by the Rear Commodore Sailing and consists of representatives from all of the major classes and groups within the club.

If you have any questions of suggestions just have a chat at the club or drop the appropriate representative a mail. We are always looking for help so if you would like to be more involved, please let us know.
Rear Commodore Sailing: Steve Barraclough
Steve started sailing at the age of 6 crewing a Mirror in the Tyne estuary, and for the next 20 years progressed steadily through several classes including National 12's, Enterprise, Albacore, Scorpion, Fireball, Int14 & Laser, competing at national and international level and dabbling in sailmaking.

After a switch to competitive windsurfing, then a brief spell racing a Laser at Burghfield in the early nineties, Steve returned to sailing at the club in 2008, and can sometimes be spotted campaigning a Phantom or helping out with the Junior Sailing activities.
Commodore: Jeremy Carey
Jeremy initially learnt to sail in his teens in Bosuns on a lake in Gemany. He however, quickly switched to windsurfing where he spent the next fifteen years attempting to drown himself and cause himself serious injury at various places along the south coast. It was on his move inland in August 2000 that he joined Burghfield and returned to dinghy sailing where he attempted to drown himself by sailing his 29er single handed!

Having survived the 29er, a Musto Skiff seemed like a stable boat to try next. Two years of swimming practice left him looking for a boat that would actually stay upright for more than ten minutes at a time and so the love affair with the National 12 began. Sailing with his partner, George, they now compete on the national circuit whenever possible, but that has in no way altered his love of the club.
Rear Commodore General Purposes:
Tony Brown
Tony is a long standing member of Burghfield and does a huge amount of work keeping those areas of the club which we all take for granted running.

Having come to dinghy sailing via rather a longer route than most, and more recently via windsurfing before kids, he has been drawn into the RS 400 fleet on the basis that they needed someone beat more convincingly.

However after 9 years of holidays with Minorca Sailing it is comforting to know that the top boys are still not yet under threat. As a last resort Tony has recently aquired a 59er, which should make for some interesting spectator sport as he and his varied crew try to come to terms with it!

In the meantime he is looking after the car park and boat park extension, working parties and genral facilities at the club, and is alwats receptive to offers of assistance, or failing that, beer.
Welcome Burghfield Topper Sailors
Whether just messing about in boats, having fun off the beach, learning to sail, flat out blasting or competitive racing, there are so many reasons for sailing the Topper. It requires little maintenance, is easily rigged in a matter of minutes, is rugged and safe for beginners and an exciting race boat too - and it is car-toppable.
Club Racing and Coaching
For Sunday racing at the club the Topper competes in the slow handicap fleet. You will often see them taking part, especially during the Spring, Summer and Autumn series - they are easily spotted by their multi-coloured sails.

If you are interested in racing at the club, then come along on a Sunday or during the summer on a Wednesday evening when pursuit racing also takes place, and have a chat to some of the other sailors who are always pleased to help you get started. We have both adults as well as junior and youth sailors who compete regularly.

An excellent guide to club racing can also be found here.

We also have regular Topper coaching on Sundays throughout the year for our Junior and Youth sailors. This training is free for any club member that has RYA 2 or equivalent - i.e. can sail a triangular course and capsize and recover. There are often a dozen or so sailors at the training spanning a broad range of abilities.

If you would like more information about Toppers at the club, then e-mail toppers@burghfieldsailing.org
Christmas Racing Series

Christmas Racing Series 2009
This Year we are continuing the racing that we offered last year over the Christmas period. Historically there have been adhoc races which occasionally happen excluding the Burghfield Icicle on Boxing Day. It seems though, that people still want to race!! The main problem with racing over the Christmas period is being able to roster club members to do duties in this frantic time.

This year we are offering a mini series of five races on three days:

Sunday 20th December

Saturday 26th December

Sunday 27th December

The only way it can run is if the people who race in the series agree to either be rescue or race officers. Last year we had a good turn out of competitors for the series, even though the wind proved to be fairly light, but we still struggled to fill all the duties required to run the racing.

The race on Boxing day will also be the Burghfield Icicle and count towards both events.
The series will have five races with three to count, two on each of the Sundays and one on Boxing Day, so if you do offer to help on one of these days you will not lose out in the series. Average points will also be available (as per normal racing) if you sign on on the day of a duty.

Because of the nature of the duties, they are considered separate to the normal duty system, so it is expected the members who decide to race in this series will offer to do a duty whether they have payed the waiver fee of not.
If enough people volunteer for duties then perhaps no one will miss more than one race as we could operate a different race team for the am and pm races.

If you intend to do the series, please be generous and offer your assistance as without the volunteers, no racing will take place.

Please use the link below to offer which date you would be willing to help out on and which duty you would prefer to do, or contact me directly at the club.

Thank you for your help and support,

Steve Barraclough
Rear Commodore Sailing

Junior Committee
The Junior committee was new for the 2007 season.
Chairman: Charles Gilchrist
I come from a sailing family and learnt to sail in the Isle of Wight when quite young in a proper clinker built Scow before progressing onto state of the art Mirrors. I had not sailed since growing too tall to see under the Mirror’s sail until about two years ago when I joined BSC. On the two or three occasions a year when I get a chance to sail I take part in the Admiral’s club activities in my Enterprise or Laser depending on whether or not I have a crew. My sailing skills are as rusty as my halyards but that does not stop me from helping children to succeed and learn from their mistakes. I get as much pleasure from this as I do from making my own mistakes. I would like to help the less competitive children encouraged into recreational sailing.
Admin & Finance: Helen Dawes
Helen is living proof that you don't need to be a sailor to play an active part at BSC. Her 'sailing' experience includes the ability to rig an Oppie, running the annual Camp for 50+ kids and max-ing the credit card on the Rooster website.

The Dawes family joined BSC 4years ago when the kids became involved in Oppie Club. Not content with standing on the shore drinking coffee, she became involved with the dry side of Oppie Club and now runs the administration for the Junior Sailing Club, from general queries to sourcing prizes and maintaining the database of sailors.

Now that both Tom and Nick have moved into the Laser 4.7 fleet, she also arranges regular external coaching for the teens in this class. Husband Jeremy coaches the 4.7s most Sunday afternoons during the year.
